Introduction

Jabalpur History

There are many theories regarding the origin of name of the city as Jabalpur. The most prevalent theory indicates that its name is derived from mythological Hindu sage "Rishi Jabali". Rishi Jabali spent many years on tapasya near the bank of the river Narmada.

It is said that in ancient times, Jabalpur was known as Tripuri Kingdom. Tripuri Kingdom was ruled by Hayahya rulers. In ancient epic of Mahabharata, one can find the reference of Tripuri State.

At the beginning of 19th century, under British India rule Jabalpur became commission headquarter of Nerbudda territories. It was pronounced & recorded as Jubbulpore. Even today while visiting Jabalpur one can witness the colonial architecture and heritage.

Tourism
